Egypt is rich in diverse habitats with its own unique fauna and flora. The Marine life is home to some of the richest and most variety of species, in particular the coral reefs of the Red Sea.
The unique strategic geographic location at the juncture of three continents has naturally enriched Egypt’s plant and animal life and in sequence Egypt.

The Egyptian Environment Affairs Agency has in turn formed the Nature Protection Department in 1992 to oversee nature conservation in Egypt and carry out the law 102/1983 for the Natural Protectorates and managing the national network of Protected Areas. A total of 17 Protected Areas have been established in Egypt since then.

Protected Areas have proven to date to be of utmost importance for the protection of the nation’s biodiversity. As of 2010, approximately 15% of the country was protected under law 102/1983.
